Airbnb Mock Interview Practice for Software Engineers

Updated · By

An Airbnb mock interview on Devana is a voice interview with an AI interviewer on one of 36 Airbnb-style questions from Devana's bank: 13 coding, 8 system design, 9 technical deep dives and 6 behavioral. Your code runs, the interviewer asks follow-ups, and you get a score out of 100. Company question sets are on the Free plan. Devana is not affiliated with Airbnb, and these are not leaked or confirmed Airbnb questions.

What the Airbnb software engineer interview looks like

Airbnb's careers FAQ says little about its interviews: depending on the position, the process may involve taking a test, making a video or joining an event, and you meet multiple people on the current team. It aims to respond to applications within 3 to 4 weeks. It does not name engineering rounds, so their shape comes from candidate reports: a recruiter call, a coding screen, then a set of interviews mixing coding, system design and Airbnb's core values. Treat that as reported.

What Airbnb does publish is its four core values: Champion the Mission, Be a Host, Embrace the Adventure and Be a Cereal Entrepreneur. Have a true story for each. Its FAQ also says you do not have to be a host or a guest to work there, but that it helps, and encourages you to get to know the site.

What Devana practices for Airbnb

Devana's Airbnb set has 36 questions, 18 of them rated hard. The topics that come up most are Databases, Machine Learning, Systems Design and APIs. They are Devana's own questions, written to reflect what Airbnb and its candidates have said publicly about its interviews. Start any of these as a mock interview:

Counted from Devana's question bank. Technical deep dives run as a system design round. Devana is not affiliated with Airbnb.

How to practice for Airbnb

  • Never sell the same night twice. The coding set includes preventing two guests from booking the same nights, merging a host's availability rules and applying a cancellation policy. Devana runs your code, so test the checkout date yourself, where an off-by-one hides.
  • Design for correctness first. The designs include the booking and reservation system, listing search, and payments between guests and hosts. Say what happens when two people book at once, or a payment fails halfway.
  • Sweat what a guest sees. The technical deep dives include time zones in a booking system, a date picker that prevents mistakes, and making a map with thousands of pins usable.
  • Write stories against the four values. The behavioral set asks about building for someone unlike you, caring about a detail nobody asked about, and helping someone else succeed.

How to set up an Airbnb mock interview

  1. Open the Airbnb set. The "Start a free Airbnb mock interview" button opens Devana's question bank filtered to Airbnb.
  2. Choose the round. Filter by type: coding, system design, technical deep dive or behavioral. A technical deep dive runs as a system design round, with a whiteboard.
  3. Choose the level. Filter by difficulty: the company sets are rated medium or hard. 18 of the 36 Airbnb questions are rated hard. You can also filter by topic.
  4. Start it. Press "Practice this question" and the voice interview starts on that question. Signed out, you are asked to sign in first; the Free plan needs no card.
  5. Role and style. A question from a company set uses your saved interviewer style and coding language from Settings. To choose your role, such as frontend or backend, and run a full two-problem round, start a standard interview from Practice instead; that setup cannot be pointed at one company.

How an Airbnb mock interview runs on Devana

Pick a question from the Airbnb set and you talk it through with Josh, Devana's AI interviewer, for up to 30 minutes on a paid plan (45 for a design question) or 20 on the Free plan. In a coding question your code runs in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java or C++; a design question has a whiteboard the interviewer reads; a behavioral question gets follow-ups about what you personally did. Each session ends with a score out of 100 on that round's rubric and a list of what raised and lowered it. For a full-length round with two problems, start a standard mock interview from Practice instead: up to 60 minutes on a paid plan, though you cannot choose the company. The mock interviews by round page shows each round type.

Can I do an Airbnb mock interview for free?

Yes. Company question sets are on Devana's Free plan, which includes 3 mock interviews a month of up to 20 minutes each, on any of the 36 Airbnb questions. On the Sprint Pass or Pro, a single question runs up to 30 minutes, or 45 for a system design question.

How do Airbnb's core values come up in interviews?
