Devana's Free plan gives you 3 AI mock coding interviews a month, up to 20 minutes each, with no card needed. An AI interviewer named Josh talks to you by voice, asks clarifying questions and follow-ups, runs your code in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java or C++, and scores the session out of 100 when it ends.
What a free coding mock interview should give you
A coding interview tests two things at once: whether you can solve the problem, and whether the interviewer can follow how you got there. Solving problems alone in an editor trains the first. Only practice with someone listening trains the second, and that is where many interviews are lost, as why LeetCode alone is not enough explains. So a free AI mock interview is worth your time only if it does four things:
- You speak, and it listens. Typing your reasoning into a chat box is a different skill from saying it while you code.
- It interrupts. A real interviewer asks why you chose a hash map, what happens on an empty input, and whether you can beat O(n²).
- Your code runs. Someone reading your code can miss an off-by-one error. A test run does not.
- The feedback is specific. "Good communication" tells you nothing. "You started coding before stating your approach" is something you can fix by your next session.
How a Devana coding round works
- Choose the setup. Pick a difficulty (easy, medium, hard or mixed), the language you will write in, and the interviewer's style: friendly, realistic, strict or coaching.
- Josh presents the problem. A standard round picks two problems you have not been given before. You can also paste any problem with Bring Your Own Problem, or choose one question from the bank of 564 coding questions, grouped into company sets such as Google, Meta and Amazon.
- You talk before you type. Ask clarifying questions, then state your approach and its complexity. Josh responds the way an interviewer would, including when your plan has a hole in it.
- You code in the built-in editor. Josh follows your code as you write it and asks about it. Run it whenever you like: it executes on Devana's servers and you see the real output.
- Time runs out like the real thing. About two minutes before the end, Josh starts wrapping up. The session ends on time, and grading runs once it does.
How the coding round is scored
Every coding session gets a score out of 100, split into communication (60%) and code (40%). Each part is made of metrics with fixed points, scored for each problem:
| Metric | Part | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Approach planning | Communication | 30 |
| Thinking out loud | Communication | 25 |
| Code defense | Communication | 20 |
| Logic explanation | Communication | 15 |
| Silence handling | Communication | 5 |
| Verbal clarity | Communication | 5 |
| Correctness | Code | 50 |
| Code structure | Code | 25 |
| Edge cases | Code | 25 |
Each part's metrics add up to 100. The session score is 60% of the communication total plus 40% of the code total.
Communication carries more weight because interviewers grade the process as well as the answer: a working brute-force solution explained step by step usually reads better than an optimal one typed in silence. The report lists what raised and lowered each score, with a label from Needs Work to Excellent, so you know which habit to change before the next session.

US prices. Pro is also $117 every 3 months ($39 a month), and many countries pay less.
A session counts against your allowance only once you have actually attempted it: one where you give fewer than 20 words of answers scores 0 and is not counted, so opening a session to look around costs nothing. Allowances reset each month. Full details are on the pricing page.
Getting the most from 3 free sessions a month
Three sessions a month is enough to find out whether talking while you code is a problem for you, and to start fixing it. Spend them deliberately:
- Session 1, an easy problem. The goal is not the problem; it is hearing yourself narrate for 20 minutes. Most people find silences they did not know about.
- Session 2, at your target difficulty. Read the first report's lowerers before you start, and change one habit. How to read mock interview feedback shows how.
- Session 3, your target company. Pick a question from its company set, or paste one from an interview report.
Between sessions, keep solving problems on your own, but out loud: say your approach before you type, every time. Learn the moves for when you get stuck, too. What to do when you get stuck in a coding interview has a five-rung ladder, and time and space complexity in interviews covers the questions you will get about your solution.
Other free ways to practise coding interviews
Devana is not the only free option. As of October 2026, from each provider's own site:
- interviewing.io has a free AI interviewer for coding and system design, and paid sessions with human engineers from $179.
- Aced (formerly Exponent, and now home to Pramp) includes 5 free peer mock interviews a month on its Basic plan: you interview another candidate, and they interview you. Here is what happened to Pramp.
- HackerRank offers AI mock interviews, including 60-minute coding rounds. Its mock interview page lists no price, and we have not tested it.
- DevInterview.AI lets you take your first AI interview free, with no card.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Devana coding mock interview really free?
Yes. The Free plan includes 3 mock interviews a month of up to 20 minutes each, with no card required. Free interviews use the same interviewer, code editor and scoring as paid ones; paid plans add more and longer interviews and the AI Coach. Every report and your session history are free on every plan.
Which programming languages can I use in a Devana coding interview?
Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java and C++. Your code runs on Devana's own servers, so you see real output and failing cases instead of an opinion about whether it would work.
Can I practise a specific LeetCode problem with the AI interviewer?
Yes. Paste the problem into Bring Your Own Problem, from LeetCode, a study guide or an interview report, and the AI interviewer runs a full coding interview around it. You can also pick a single question from Devana's question bank, including company sets.
How long is a free coding mock interview?
Up to 20 minutes on the Free plan. On the Sprint Pass and Pro, a coding round can run up to 60 minutes, or 30 minutes when you choose a single question from the bank. About two minutes before time is up, the interviewer starts wrapping the session up.
Does the AI interviewer give hints?
Only in the way a real interviewer would. The friendly style offers them, the default style gives one when you ask, and there is a hint button in the session. Try talking through being stuck first: that is what a real interviewer wants to hear.
