Google Mock Interview Practice for Software Engineers

Updated October 12, 2026 · By the Devana Team

A Google mock interview on Devana is a voice interview with an AI interviewer on one of 72 Google-style questions from Devana's bank: 28 coding, 16 system design, 16 technical deep dives and 12 behavioral. Your code runs, the interviewer asks follow-ups, and you get a score out of 100. Company question sets are on the Free plan. Devana is not affiliated with Google, and these are not leaked or confirmed Google questions.

What the Google software engineer interview looks like

Google has not published a step-by-step loop for engineers that we could read, so its shape comes from candidate reports: a recruiter conversation, one or two technical screens, then a set of interviews, often four or five. They mix coding, system design for more senior roles, and a behavioral round usually called "Googleyness and Leadership". Expect variation by role and level.

What Google has published is how it interviews. Its re:Work guide to structured interviewing describes the same vetted questions for everyone in a role, detailed notes, shared rubrics and trained interviewers, and Laszlo Bock's Work Rules! describes hiring committees deciding from that written feedback. The reasoning you say out loud is what gets written down.

What Devana practices for Google

Devana's Google set has 72 questions, 33 of them rated hard. The topics that come up most are Scalability, Systems Design, APIs and Databases. They are Devana's own questions, written to reflect what Google and its candidates have said publicly about its interviews. Start any of these as a mock interview:

How to practice for Google

  • Narrate the whole solution. A rubric filled in from notes can only credit what you said. Devana's coding score is 60% communication for the same reason: approach planning, thinking out loud and explaining your logic.
  • Expect search-shaped problems. Our Google coding questions lean on retrieval and ranking: autocomplete from a stream of queries, top-K documents under a latency budget, merging sorted result shards.
  • Design at Google's scale. The design questions are Google products: search autocomplete, a web crawler, YouTube upload and playback. State your numbers before you draw a box.
  • Have stories for ambiguity. The behavioral set asks about a decision made with incomplete information and disagreeing with someone more senior.

How a Google mock interview runs on Devana

Pick a question from the Google set and you talk it through with Josh, Devana's AI interviewer, for up to 30 minutes on a paid plan or 20 on the Free plan. In a coding question your code runs in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java or C++; a design question has a whiteboard the interviewer reads; a behavioral question gets follow-ups about what you personally did. Each session ends with a score out of 100 on that round's rubric and a list of what raised and lowered it. For a full-length round with two problems, start a standard mock interview from Practice instead: up to 60 minutes on a paid plan, though you cannot choose the company. The mock interviews by round page shows each round type.

Frequently asked questions

Are Devana's Google questions real Google interview questions?

No. Devana's 72 Google questions are its own, written to reflect what Google and its candidates have said publicly about its interviews. They are not leaked or confirmed Google questions, and Devana is not affiliated with Google.

Can I do a Google mock interview for free?

Yes. Company question sets are on Devana's Free plan, which includes 3 mock interviews a month of up to 20 minutes each, on any of the 72 Google questions. On the Sprint Pass or Pro, a single question runs up to 30 minutes.

What does Google look for in an engineering interview?

In Work Rules!, Laszlo Bock, Google's former head of People Operations, names four attributes: general cognitive ability, role-related knowledge, leadership and Googleyness. Google's re:Work guide describes structured interviews scored on shared rubrics from the interviewer's notes, so the reasoning you say out loud is what gets recorded.
