We're fixing the gap between knowing code and explaining it

Updated

Devana (joindevana.com) is an AI mock interview platform for software engineers. Technical interviews test two things: whether you can solve the problem, and whether you can explain your thinking clearly while someone watches. Most practice tools train only the first. Devana trains both.

Full-stack engineer with 4 years at Amazon, now building Devana. After solving more than 500 LeetCode problems and still walking out of interviews knowing his communication had let him down, he built the practice tool he wanted. He builds the product and writes the guides on this site.

Why Devana exists

Plenty of engineers who can solve the problem still lose the interview. They go quiet while they think, skip the edge cases, or freeze when the interviewer pushes back. That is a practice gap more than a skill gap: practice platforms check your code, peer mocks depend on matching schedules, and coaching with real interviewers is expensive, so the talking part rarely gets rehearsed.

Devana is built for that part. Josh runs the interview out loud, asks why you chose what you chose, and scores how you explained your work as well as whether it works. You can practice at any hour, on any problem, as often as your plan allows.

What Devana does

  • Voice mock interviewsCoding, system design, behavioral and resume-based rounds, spoken out loud with Josh, Devana's AI interviewer. How each round runs.
  • Code that runsA built-in editor runs your solution in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java or C++ while you talk it through.
  • Bring your own problemPaste any problem you're working on, from a practice question to one tagged for a company, and get interviewed on it.
  • A scored reportEvery session ends with a score out of 100, split into how you communicated and the technical side, with what raised and lowered it.
  • A question bankOver 500 coding questions, plus system design, technical deep dive and behavioral ones, by company and topic, in the question bank.
  • Free guidesPattern guides, worked problems with tested solutions, and company interview guides.

How a coding round is scored

A coding round scores six things about how you communicated: approach planning, thinking out loud, logic explanation, code defense, silence handling and verbal clarity. It scores three about your code: correctness, code structure and edge cases. Communication is 60% of the round's score, because that is the part most practice skips. System design and behavioral rounds have rubrics of their own, and how interviewers score communication compares ours with what companies publish.

What we believe

  • Honesty over encouragement. Josh doesn't tell you you're doing great when you aren't. In his default style he gives a hint only when you ask for one, and every score comes with the specific moments that raised or lowered it.
  • Pressure is the point. Practice should feel like the real thing, follow-up questions included, because the real thing is uncomfortable.
  • Privacy by design. Voice is processed in real time and not kept as a recording, and we never sell your personal information. The privacy policy has the details.
  • Facts you can check. The guides on this site cite their sources, date their prices and take no paid placements. How we write them.
