Netflix Software Engineer Interview Process: What to Expect

Devana Team

Netflix does not publish a step-by-step interview guide that we could find. It publishes something more useful: a culture memo that describes the people it wants to hire in unusual detail. Read it before your interviews, because the behavioural questions are built on it.

The process

Candidates commonly describe a recruiter call, a conversation with the hiring manager, a technical screen, and then a set of interviews with the team. The format adapts to the team more than at most large companies, and the interviews are widely described as assuming you have owned systems in production. These details are reported rather than official.

What Netflix assesses: the culture memo

The Netflix culture memo says it wants "unusually responsible people who thrive on this openness and freedom." The ideas it is built on map directly onto interview questions:

From the memoWhat it means in an interview
Context, not controlShow you can make good calls with context rather than instructions
Informed captainHave stories where you owned a significant decision end to end
Farming for dissentExplain how you sought out disagreement before deciding
Disagree, then commitDescribe backing a decision you argued against
Highly aligned, loosely coupledShow you can move independently without losing the wider goal
CandourGive an example of direct feedback you gave, or took well

The memo also lists the values it looks for: selflessness, judgment, candour, creativity, courage, inclusion, curiosity and resilience. Expect at least one question aimed squarely at judgment: a call you made with incomplete information, and how it turned out.

What our Netflix question bank looks like

Devana's question bank holds 47 Netflix questions, written to reflect how Netflix interviews: its products, its published values and the round types candidates describe. They are our questions, not leaked ones. How they divide up says a lot about where to spend your preparation.

Round typeQuestionsExamples
Coding16Adaptive bitrate selection; Resume playback across devices; Choose what to preposition on an edge appliance
System design10Design video playback end to end; Design a CDN embedded in ISP networks; Design the recommendation system
Technical deep dives13How one slow service takes down four others; Choosing timeout values; Designing a genuinely useful fallback
Behavioural8A significant decision you made without approval; The most candid feedback you have given; Disagreeing then committing

27 of the 47 are rated hard. The topics that come up most often are Scalability, Systems Design, Caching, APIs, Machine Learning and Hash Map.

More than half of our Netflix questions are rated hard, and they come from streaming: adaptive bitrate, playback across devices, content delivery, and the event data a global service produces. The technical deep dives are about failure: how one slow service takes down others, choosing timeouts, and designing fallbacks that are actually useful.

How to prepare

  • โœ“ Read the memo, then write your stories against it. One story per row of the table above covers most of what the behavioural round will ask.
  • โœ“ Lead with decisions you owned. The informed captain idea means "the team decided" is a weak answer. Say what you decided and why.
  • โœ“ Design for failure first. Netflix built and open-sourced Chaos Monkey, which randomly terminates production instances. Show you design for things breaking: timeouts, retries with backoff, circuit breakers, graceful degradation.
  • โœ“ Learn the streaming basics. Encoding ladders, adaptive bitrate and edge caching are the natural material for Netflix design questions; Netflix runs its own content delivery network, Open Connect.
  • โœ“ Prepare a candid feedback story. Feedback you gave that was hard to give, or took that was hard to hear. Behavioural questions beyond STAR shows how to keep the focus on what you did.

Frequently asked questions

Does Netflix have a standard interview process?

Not one it publishes. Candidates report a broadly similar sequence that adapts to each team.

What is the keeper test?

From the culture memo: managers ask themselves whether they would fight to keep someone, or hire them again. It shapes how Netflix thinks about performance, and it is worth knowing before you sit across from a Netflix manager.

Do I need streaming experience?

Not necessarily, but you should be able to reason about large-scale delivery and failure. Those are the problems Netflix's systems are built around.
